Dive Logging App 🌊

User Research + UI/UX Design

Scuba divers prioritize safety above all else. Accidents can occur due to insufficient preparation and a lack of understanding of the dive site. To address this, divers typically maintain paper logbooks to record essential information like site conditions, dive duration, and maximum depth, which enables them to monitor their performance. However, the utilization of this data is often limited.
Therefore, our objective is to develop a mobile application that leverages log data to enhance diver safety.

Ideation & Research

Our team started by making a user journey and asking “How might we?” question depend on the pain point and high point which we found from the Kind Café customer.

-How might we create a sense of understanding & community for the new customers who are uninformed & misinformed about what it means to practice Zero Waste?
-How might we create space for more digital interaction

I conducted field studies in local and international dive shops, interviewed more than 20 divers. Through this and building mental models and analyzing user behavior, the key features that our users wanted were across three main areas: site condition library, logging, and performance tracking.

Storyboard and User flow

Our team started by making a user journey and asking “How might we?” question depend on the pain point and high point which we found from the Kind Café customer.

-How might we create a sense of understanding & community for the new customers who are uninformed & misinformed about what it means to practice Zero Waste?
-How might we create space for more digital interaction

We created three major users flows around the main functionalities our users want.

1. Checking dive site conditions and prepare for the dive
2. Log the dive experience after the dive
3. Viewing dive statistics.

Storyboarding helped us to string together personas and user stories with the data points gathered from research.

Testing

Initial Sketch and Testing

We then sketched and wireframed several potential solutions, and tested with target audience. By incorporating user feedback early on, it helps us to build a solid UX foundation.

User Testing Finding

Logging process consists a lot of data from different levels. Initially, we developed a linear process, but users said they felt limited by the large number of steps they had to go through to log their data. The final design split the data-logging into two parts: basic logging and advanced logging, so users have the freedom to choose what they want to log and save at any moment.

Prototype

We developed high-fidelity mockups using Sketch and prototyped with Invision and Principle. Screen flows with hi-fi mockups help maintain consistency in design and will speed up development later on.
Interactive Logging

Data-logging in Scuba Diving consists data from many different levels, we split this process into basic logging and advanced logging, so users have the freedom to choose what they want to log, and save at any moment.

Performance Tracking

Keeps track of users' dive performance above sea level. When the dive is over, almost every aspect of data awaits, from basics like total dives, visited sites, specialties to advanced options, such as average air consumption and total bottom time.

Dive site Library

goLog uses the log data to create an intelligent library of dive knowledge. You can review detailed site conditions and receive equipment recommendations.

Reflection

What I learnt during this project is stay focused on the MVP and avoid letting a single user feedback steer the project. Keep in mind that it's impossible to please everyone. Also, it’s better to start research as soon as possible, and keep access to the target audience as open as possible. Time is valuable, so make the most of it by utilizing every minute you have with your target audience.
