Speculative Design + Critical thinking

A meat generator device that generate meat for people to eat from their own body tissues, blood and cells.
The team believes that meat production doesn’t have to involve cruelty.  We’re critiquing the idea that butchering and consuming meat is unethical and we can use our own body material to produce our own food as an alternative food form.

What would vegetarian say now?😏️ Cannibalism?

Intro

MeatFlesh is an meat generator device that generate meat for people to eat from user’s own body tissues, blood and cells. It’s for people in a speculative future where food resources are scarce because of the inefficient and increasing food consumption habits that are developed by the previous generations. Additionally, animal rights and freedom have become more prominent and valued by the general public, therefore people have turned to their own body as a food alternative that is self-sustainable, and ethical.

Our device is meant to exist within everyday domestic homes, similar to other household appliances.

Why

We want to prompt the users to think critically and reflect on their own meat consumption habits and beliefs.

It questions the feasibility of achieving a "victimless utopia" through self generate materials and reflects on our relationship with the animal world.

Inspiration

Inspiration #1 Dialysis Sheep

In the future, a patient with kidney failure could have a dialysis sheep. During the day, the sheep grazes in the patient's garden to cleanse its kidneys, while at night it is placed bedside, connected to the patient's fistula via blood lines. Waste products are filtered through the sheep's kidney, cleaning the patient's blood, which is then returned to the patient.

Inspiration #2 Stitchless Leather

An innovative prototype for a stitchless leather jacket grown from immortalized cell lines on a biodegradable polymer matrix. It explores the future of lab-grown leather, inspired by the organ perfusion pump. This project challenges conventional practices in clothing production, raising awareness about material waste and prompting us to consider the implications of tissue engineering in consumer products.

Target Audience

Our target audience is the future generation who are suffering from the consequences of the unsustainable meat consumption habit from the past. Another primary audience is those who are interested in learning more about their meat consumption or would like to satisfy their cravings for meat.

Form Iterations

Upon conceiving the idea, we began the process of sketching various potential forms for this device. Explored different shapes, sizes, and configurations, visualizing how the device could best serve its intended purpose.

Supporting Material

We also explored the development of peripheral products that complement the main device. These derivative products aim to extend the functionality, versatility, and personalization of the main device, ensuring a comprehensive and satisfying user experience.

Final Artefacts

The design process are document in our three-week-long workbook (click to download). This workbook chronicles our journey from concept development to the final product, detailing all the decisions made and problems encountered, along with the corresponding improvements.

Our Critique

The team firmly believes in reimagining food production without cruelty and transforming waste materials into valuable food sources. By questioning the ethics of meat consumption and exploring alternative food forms, we aim to encourage users to engage in critical thinking and reflect on their consumption habits and beliefs. Our goal is to provoke a shift in mindset and promote more sustainable and ethical choices in food production and consumption.
